Free software provides almost any function generally useful, and quite a lot of specialty function as well. The price of free software is also difficult to beat.
Despite this, there are areas where the polish or function of commercial software makes it sufficiently attractive that it becomes a real alternative to free software. This section of this website covers generally useful commercial software that has either no freeware equivalent or that is substantially more functional than its freeware equivalents.
