The built-in Memo Pad application lets you create text memos of up to 4096 characters each. Each memo may be assigned a category, and the first line of each memo is the memo’s title.
Memo titles are displayed in a numbered list to show the memos available. (No use is made of the numbers.) The list of titles can be sorted alphabetically by title, or manually. In manual ordering, you drag and drop titles into the order you want. The list of titles displayed may be filtered by the memo’s category. Single memos, all memos in a category, or all memos can be beamed to another Palm OS device user.
Memos can be used to store almost any information that can be expressed in text. This can include outlines, documents, shopping lists, travel itineraries, lists of things to do, and so forth.
Memos are efficiently stored on the Palm OS device—a 2-megabyte Palm OS device can hold over 500 memos, an 8-megabyte device over 2000 memos. You can generally afford to keep even infrequently used information in your device. You can keep track of auto fuel use and maintenance schedules, track car expenses incurred in volunteer work, list gift ideas, list friends’ book and movie recommendations, keep wine tasting notes, record weekly menu plans from the last six months, log your exercise; anything you want to track or might want to access while away from your normal work location.
The 4096-chararacter memos Memo Pad provides are frequently large enough for the sorts of information you want to carry around with you. However, if this limitation is onerous, the freeware program CryptoPad can raise this limit to 32,767 characters. Also, see the Writing section of this web site for a discussion of using Palm OS devices for writing long works.
